Meet Audrey Tarter

Can you share your career path and what led you to become the Vice President of Human Resources?

I’ve been in HR for 17 years, holding roles in training and development, HR program management, and spending over 10 years as an HR Business Partner. I’ve worked in industries such as financial services, insurance, semiconductors, and technology. Becoming Vice President of Human Resources felt like a natural next step in my career.

Who has been a mentor or significant influence in your professional development, and what did you learn from them?

It might sound like a cliché, but it wasn’t just one person. I’ve picked up valuable tips and strategies from each leader I’ve worked with — and for — throughout my career.

What HR initiatives are you most passionate about and why?

I’m most passionate about employee development. I believe that everyone has unique talents, and when we tap into those talents and help people grow, it excites them to come to work each day and allows them to do their best work. An engaged workforce is motivating for everyone.

What strategies do you use to ensure high employee engagement and retention levels?

The first strategy is what I mentioned earlier—tapping into employees’ talents and helping them grow. Most people have untapped potential. Other ways to keep employees engaged and retain them include maintaining regular contact, treating everyone with kindness and respect, providing constructive feedback on their performance, and showing appreciation for their efforts, whether things are going well or not.

What is your approach to talent acquisition and ensuring we attract top talent?

First and foremost, we need to clearly understand the roles we require and the skills and capabilities necessary for those roles. When we’re clear on our expectations, we can find better matches in the market. Additionally, we must effectively articulate our Mission and Values to candidates so they understand the type of company we are and what we expect from our employees. Properly pricing jobs and offering competitive compensation aligned with the market is also essential.

How do you stay updated with the latest trends and developments in HR?

I stay updated on HR trends and developments through continuing education, professional subscriptions, and networking. I hold a SHRM-SCP (Society for Human Resource Management, Senior Certified Professional) certification, which requires 60 hours of continuing education in HR every three years. I also read research from Harvard Business Review to stay informed on broader business trends. Additionally, I maintain a strong network of HR professionals and executives from previous companies, which allows me to tap into their expertise when rolling out initiatives or addressing challenges.

What are some of your hobbies, and what do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy cooking, reading, and spending time with my family. One of my favorite things to make is pizza. I make the dough and sauce from scratch and customize the pizzas to cater to my family’s tastes, which can be quite finicky.
