T2 has some of the brightest minds in the parking industry, and each employee brings a unique set of talents and experiences to the table. We thought you might like to learn more about these talented individuals. In our Employee Spotlight series, you’ll get to know one employee each month. This month we talked to Aaron Grinnell, Sr. UI/UX Developer.
Where did you grow up?
I was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, but moved to Indianapolis at a young age and have been in the region ever since.
What drew you to working in web development?
I had always been into art, design, and engineering growing up. After graduating college, I began in video production and animation work, then moved into graphic design and brand identity work. When I started to pick up more web design freelance opportunities, I was able to combine my design passion for my new passion for development. This led into web development, then software development, and now specializing in the interfaces and experiences of software with UI/UX development.
How did you end up in the parking industry?
I can’t say it’s a fascinating story. After many years in the healthcare and banking industries, a recruiter found me on LinkedIn, and I was just ready for a change. I didn’t know anything about parking software, but now that I do, I find it amazing how many people and companies our software benefits every day.
What do you do as a Sr. UI/UX Developer for T2?
In the early stages of a project, I am involved in working with our Product team on requirements and design. I spend time designing wireframes, prototypes, and workflows of how the applications could look and interact. Once development begins, I help with documentation, writing developer tasks, and of course the actual programming of the applications.
Outside of specific projects, I am involved in creating standards, architecture, and reusable components for our applications. This better aligns our UI/UX developers, helps speed up development, and creates consistency within our applications.
What’s something that you think people don’t know about parking that you find interesting?
I find license plate recognition and the push for more personalized, mobile-friendly applications the most interesting. I think every industry needs to find innovative ways to stay current with technologies and adapt to the user’s experiences, and those are the two that stand out for me and probably others.
What do you enjoy about working at T2?
Besides some of the great people I have worked with, I would say being involved in pushing T2’s applications into the modern age in both technology and design interfaces. I strive to make anyone who uses our apps be able to easily get their work done and have a user-friendly experience.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I proposed to my wife while skydiving. We have always been the adventurous type, and we both really wanted to go skydiving for the first time. I knew this would be a great occasion to propose, and that she would say yes because she had been waiting for years. (Yeah, it took me 6 years, I suck.) I printed out a 30-foot banner stating, “Will you marry me, Shari?” We then each went separately in our jumps, so after I went first, I got the banner out to lay across the landing zone where she would soon be. As she got closer and closer to the ground, I hear “Oh my God” on repeat, and she was so excited she almost broke both her legs on the land. Luckily, she didn’t, and I got on a knee, proposed, and have been married 12 years since. We also got the whole dive and event on video, which was great.
