Black History celebrations in the US and Canada this past month have provided many examples of how far we’ve come. Throughout the month, I’ve enjoyed reflecting on several stories highlighting the amazing contributions and achievements made by Black individuals in the past and present. I am always incredibly amazed at the brave individuals who have faced barriers and while I feel optimistic, there’s still so much work to do.
While honoring these incredible humans in this year’s artist-related theme such as Jean-Michel Basquiet, DJ Kool Herc, and Sidney Poitier, I am reminded that I must do my part as a leader and ally to ensure that we continue to increase our representation of all individuals. As leaders, we are responsible for finding paths of inclusion and truly representing the diversity of the people we serve. A few ways in which we can do this are:
- Continue to grow our DEI committee and provide recommendations to all leadership on hiring practices and outreach in underrepresented communities.
- Providing continuous educational opportunities for all employees.
- Provide mentorship for rising talent.
Together, we can pave the way and drive positive change for a future where everyone, regardless of background, can thrive and contribute to the continued evolution of the parking industry. I’m proud of how far the parking industry has come. In fact, DEI topics were prevalent at the IPMI Leadership Summit this past week. The topics challenged us to discuss how we can be more inclusive, expand our networks, and continue to be educated. It was humbling.
As Black History Month comes to a close, I can speak for T2 that we recognize and appreciate the invaluable contributions and accomplishments made by Black professionals who have paved the way thus far for our societies, and for the parking industry. Let’s continue to celebrate those successes each day of the year, honoring the diversity that strengthens us. We continue to commit ourselves to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion at T2.
