T2 Backgrounder
Mike Simmons and Steve Howard founded T2 Systems in April of 1994. T2’s original software package,
Terminator, an enforcement product, was at the time the only parking software to support a Graphical
User Interface that ran on both Windows and Macintosh platforms. By the end of 1995, 30 organizations
were using the software.
For the next three years, T2 continued to enhance Terminator while developing a new product that combined
advanced technology with parking-specific features. That combination became a reality in 1997 with the
release of T2 PowerPark parking management system, a permit and enforcement product that was the evolution
of Terminator. PowerPark was the first parking management software awarded the On-Oracle certification by
the Oracle Corporation.
T2 Systems continued to increase the functionality of PowerPark by incorporating features specific to
the business of parking. The combination of better software and superior customer support quickly helped
T2 gain a following within the industry. From 1997 to 1999, the Company grew by 295% and nearly doubled
its customer base and in 1999 was ranked 245 on the Inc. 500 list.
In 1999, T2 completed a “cross-border” acquisition of Logic4U, a Canadian competitor with significant
market share. With this acquisition, T2 added a strong customer base and a knowledgeable technical staff,
while eliminating a key competitor.
To meet the needs of customers looking to connect their PowerPark database with external systems, T2
developed PowerLink. This application-programming interface (API) gave users real-time access to PowerPark
from other ERP systems and the Internet. Recognizing that not all organizations had the resources or
expertise to develop this interface internally, T2 Systems began to offer e-business solutions.
Responding to technology trends as well as the increasing complexities of parking operations, T2 Systems
launched T2 Flex in late 2004. T2 Flex is the first parking management platform built to use standards-based
data exchange making integration with other systems easier. It is a thin-client application, which means all
data as well as the software resides on secure servers in one location. T2 hosts many of its customers’
applications and data within a Tier 1 hosting facility in Carmel, IN (Tier 1 providers are part of the Internet
backbone and have the largest Internet connections. There are only 30 Tier 1 providers in the US). With the
introduction of T2 Flex, the Company also transitioned from the business model of selling perpetual software
licenses to subscription-based licensing of its software (SaaS), to ensure long-term revenue streams.
At the end of 2006, T2 Flex became the industry’s first unified system that combines management of permits,
enforcement, access and revenue control. Among other benefits, it enables unified inventory and management
of all parking spaces, management of all customer activity and information from a single user interface,
unified reporting and business process configuration and tracking.
In September 2006, T2 also launched Citation Collection Services, LLC – a subsidiary focused on processing
and collections of parking tickets. T2 customers had frequently requested this service.
Now, more than 300 sites throughout the United States and Canada use T2 solutions and the company continues
to increase market share.
